Sacred to the Germanic tribes the Irminsul stood for centuries until it was destroyed by Charlemagne during his Christian crusade. In common with all Heathen Northern Europe sacred places were desecrated, the rites were supressed and people killed. The only remaining image of the Irminsul is on a triumphal freize showing it broken down by the troops.
