Hengist and Horsa. The founding brothers

Three ships arrive at Ebbsfleet,Kent

Hengist and Horsa have taken on legendary status as leaders of the first settlers of Germanic stock to come to England. According to the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, they left Jutland with a warband in 3 ships having been invited by the Romano-Brythonic ruler Vortigern to help defend against invading Scots and Picts from the north. The brothers landed at "Wippidsfleet" (Ebbsfleet,Kent) and successfully drove off the invaders, whereupon they received a grant of land in Kent from Vortigern.

Wodens Spear Warriors

Inspired by Sutton Hoo helmet decoration

One of the decorative plates attached to the iconic Sutton Hoo helmet shows

two strange figures with birds heads on their heads ( ravens) performing a ritual dance with swords and

spears. The spear is associated with Woden as are the two ravens depicted.

The faces are covered by stylised masks and the foot of each dancer is pointed so as to  suggest movement.

I have used 'artistic licence' in my use of colour in an attempt to interpret their meaning.

The print comes unmounted. Size:12" wide x 16.5" high ( 21.5 cms wide x 42 cms high )

This fragment has a piercing and could have been hung as a decoration for ritual purposes.

The design is based on an artefact found in Fen Drayton, Cambridgeshire, England. The original find is a cast copper-alloy Early Medieval Pressblech or die-plate dated to the 6th century AD used for making thin, sheet metal, mounts.
